
Margaret was born in 1961 in the small cane town of Gordonvale,and is a descendant of the Dyirrbal (Jirrbal), and Ngadjan tribes, Rainforest aboriginal groups of the Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland Australia.
Margaret spent her early years in the Tin Mining town of Herberton and later attended the Atherton Primary and Secondary schools. During her early teen years she worked with her father in the bush at Silver Valley where he worked a small Alluvial Tin mining operation.
Margaret's traditional aboriginal name, "Manggangu" (meaning pick up) took up painting as a hobby in 1989 and turned her artistic skills and talent into a living in 1994. Most of her works are pained on canvas and other media such as leather, wood, and ceramics. Manggangu's works have been exhibited overseas, and are held in private collections in Australia and other European countries, and one of her pieces of artwork now hangs in the Queensland Museum.
Marnggangu has a daughter, Kimberley and resides in Cairns, Far North Queensland.
